Grey hat SEO techniques are methods that combine both white hat and black hat SEO tactics. For example, creating high-quality content and then buying backlinks for it is a grey hat SEO technique. Creating content is a white-hat SEO technique and buying links is a clear black-hat SEO technique.

Gray hat SEO refers to tactics and techniques that fall in a "gray area" between white hat SEO (which follows search engine guidelines) and black hat SEO (which deliberately violates search engine guidelines). These tactics are not strictly in line with search engine guidelines, but are not necessarily against them either.

Google doesn't prefer gray hat SEO techniques because they can still violate Google's guidelines and lead to penalties. But some user practices it. Here are some of them:
1. Link Building : While buying links or participating in link schemes is against Google's guidelines
2. Guest Blogging :Guest blogging can be a gray area. If done solely for the purpose of acquiring links without providing valuable content, it can be seen as manipulative.
3. Keyword Stuffing
4. Cloaking : Cloaking, where different content is shown to users and search engines, is against Google's guidelines

Using White Hat SEO strategies in your content is accepted by Google, while Black Hat SEO is not. Grey Hat SEO is simply a combination of both Black and White Hat SEO. In simple words, Grey Hat SEO can be a riskier practice than White hat SEO – but it might still avoid getting your website penalised by search engines and their affiliated websites.
